Distracted Driving and Car Accident Rates

Everyone knows that distracted driving causes car accidents. But how much of a problem is it? It’s a big one, according to the Texas Department of Transportation.

According to the TxDOT, in 2022 (the most recent year for which these statistics have been reported), distracted driving caused nearly one in six car crashes on Texas roads. In 2022, 487 people died, and 2,824 were seriously injured due to distracted driving.

Distracted Driving is Anything That Takes Your Eyes Off the Road

Any activity that takes your attention away from driving is technically distracted driving, even if it only causes you to glance away for a moment. Distractions can be things within a person’s control, like the choice to put on make-up behind the wheel. They can also be things beyond the driver’s control, like the moment a bee flies through an open window.

Sometimes, things that seem harmless are actually distracted driving. This includes programming your vehicle’s navigation system or adjusting the radio while driving.

Types of Distracted Driving

All distractions can be dangerous. Here are some of the most common forms (and forms most likely to cause personal injury) of distracted driving:

  • Texting while driving and other cell phone use
  • Checking the GPS navigation system
  • Adjusting controls in the vehicle, including the mirrors, temperature or radio
  • Searching for lost items in the vehicle
  • Eating or drinking
  • Smoking
  • Interacting with other passengers in the vehicle
  • Surprises in the vehicle, like insects or spilled beverages
  • Drowsy or fatigued driving

Texting While Driving Can Mean a $200 Fine in Texas

Using cell phones while driving is especially dangerous because it takes your hands and eyes off the road and keeps your mind distracted.

Since September 1, 2017, Texas law has made it illegal to read, write or send a text message while driving in Texas. Violators can face a fine of up to $200. In addition to that texting ban, some cities ban all cell phone use while driving. These cities include San Antonio and Austin. And drivers are not allowed to use cell phones in Texas school crossing zones, no matter where they are.

Some teen drivers face a complete cell phone ban. In Texas, drivers with learners’ permits are prohibited from using cell phones during their first six months of driving, even if the cell phone is hands-free. Drivers under the age of 18 may not use any handheld devices while driving.
